The Center for Economic Studies at the U.S. Census Bureau is expanding its research program and anticipates multiple openings for Ph.D. and ABD economists. Economists are being sought to conduct research using the confidential microdata on businesses and households collected by the Census Bureau and the data from our Longitudinal Employer Household Dynamics (LEHD) Program. CES provides a unique and outstanding research environment for applied microeconomists. The research staff has access to internal microdata, which can be used to examine questions that cannot be addressed by aggregate statistics or public microdata. CES’ experienced staff of more than a dozen applied microeconomists creates a supportive and collegial atmosphere for conducting research. Research contributions in the form of publications in respected peer-reviewed journals and domestic and international conference presentations are encouraged and valued. In addition, CES runs an active seminar series with speakers from academia and other government agencies and provides superb research facilities.

Economists are being sought to carry out empirical research using the Census Bureau’s business data. Topics in applied microeconomics would include (but are not limited to) productivity, firm behavior, technological change, industrial location, entrepreneurship, labor, trade, health care, energy, urban and regional economics, and the environment. Successful applicants are expected to develop a research agenda around the Census business microdata and to contribute research aimed at improving Census surveys and data collection. Experience with establishment-, firm-, and/or industry-level data is especially valued.

Economists are also being sought to conduct research using the integrated household and business data from CES’s innovative LEHD program. LEHD economists aid in the development of new data products, work with other programs at Census, assist in making the data available to the research community and conduct empirical research on a wide variety of topics in applied economics. Active research areas using LEHD data include (but are not limited to) labor market dynamics, immigration, older workers, local economic development, transportation, disaster recovery and advanced statistical techniques that yield more effective public-use data. Successful applicants are expected to develop a research agenda around the LEHD data and to be actively engaged in LEHD's related products and programs. Experience with large-scale household and/or firm-level data is especially valued.

While Ph.D. level economists are preferred, advanced ABDs are also encouraged to apply. U.S. citizenship is required. We will meet with candidates at the 2009 AEA meetings. The U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau, is an equal opportunity employer. Submit vita, research paper demonstrating strong empirical skills, and three letters of recommendation to Alice Zawacki at ces.recruiting.list@census.gov.

Receipt of submitted information will be confirmed in a timely manner.
