Description
The manufacturing economic census is the major source of information about the structure and functioning of the manufacturing sector. It provides essential information for government, business, industry, and the general public. The Census Bureau conducts the economic census every 5 years, covering years ending with a 2 or 7. The economic census furnishes an important part of the framework for such composite measures as the gross domestic product estimates, input/output measures, production and price indexes, and other statistical series that measure short-term changes in economic conditions.
Observations
The current manufacturing universe includes about 400,000 establishments. The population of manufacturing establishments has grown steadily from the 1963 population of 305,000.

Description
The mining economic census is the major source of information about the structure and functioning of the mining sector. All mining establishments of companies with one or more paid employees are covered.
Observations
The 1987 Census of Mining canvased a population of approximately 35,000 establishments. The 1992 Census included approximately 30,000 establishments, and the 1997 Census covered approximately 25,000 establishments.

The Census of Services (CSR) housed at CES through 1997 cover hotels, motels, and other lodging places; personal and business services; automotive repair, services, and parking; miscellaneous repair services; and amusement and recreation services, including motion pictures. The CSRs also include health services; legal services; educational services, except elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional schools, and junior colleges; social services; museums, art galleries, botanical gardens, and zoos; membership organizations, except labor unions and political and religious organizations; engineering, accounting, research, management, and related services; and services not elsewhere classified.
